Dear Caver,

OTR 2018 is upon us! Gates open this coming Thursday at noon, August 30, 2018. This year's theme is Steam Punk, because we are throwing-back to the last millennium.

Gate Duty! Join SCUM Ladies from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday as we check for tags and welcome new arrivals. There couldn't be a better way to usher in OTR. Snacks and beverages welcome.

Pot Luck Dinner: Prepare your best camping fare, make enough to share. Dinner will start at 6 p.m., on Friday under the Scum Ridge Caving Club canopy. Join us for friends and food!

Nelson Cave: After a long awaited check, we have permission to venture forth to Nelson Cave in beautiful Randolph County. Caving adventurers will depart from the Scum Ridge Caving Club canopy at approximately 10 a.m., Saturday morning. Proper caving gear required. For those seeking a more challenging cave, feel free to plan your own trip, just send pictures to Krista Tetrick or Brenda Francis.

SCUM Meeting: Sunday at noon we will have our bi-annual meeting to discuss old business, new business, and plan for the coming year under the Scum Ridge Caving Club canopy. For personal reasons, Devon must step down as secretary. Please consider candidates to fill this office or any others.

Scum Ridge White Board: The club will have a white board under the canopy this year for details on events and meetings. Folks are encouraged to use it for any club related communications, or other important messages. See you at OTR!

Photos from our first annual Spring Meeting, 2018

Don't forget that our spring meeting will be the second weekend of June 2019 at Tucker's place near Hambleton, West Virginia.

#####

Dear Caver,

Scum Ridge Caving Club is organizing a Spring Meeting! We are getting all the details together for you, but the date is set for the weekend of June 8‑10 at Tucker's place in Hendricks, West Virginia. Stay tuned for more information.

The 2018 Old Timers Reunion is featuring a Steampunk Theme. We have been kicking around the idea of having t-shirts printed. Your input on a design would be welcome and even encouraged. We will get some mock-ups together soon.

Below are the minutes of the 2017 Scum Ridge Caving Club Annual Meeting:

Meeting called to order by President Patty Taylor at 11:10 a.m., on September 3, 2017. The meeting was attended by twenty-six people, at the Old Timers Reunion, in West Virginia.

Devon Taylor read the minutes of the 2016 meeting. The minutes were voted on and approved.

Old Business

The Tetrick Family announced that Chase Tetrick would be eligible for membership in the club. He was given an application. No other new members are pending at this time.

Jamie donated a trailer to the club. The trailer will be stored at the site. It will house the canopy and other OTR gear.

Krista Tetrick, our Vice President said she would purchase and bring a white board for next year (2018). The spending was approved by a vote from Scum Ridge members.

The first annual OTR caving trip had many bumps and mishaps, but it was a lot of fun! It was agreed we would leave earlier next time. The next annual caving trip will be Saturday, September 1, 2018. Participants will be ready to leave at 10 a.m.

The potluck continues to be a success. It was a good thing we brought in more picnic tables! We had a very good showing, particularly considering how bad the weather had been up until the very moment of the potluck.

New Business

Scum Coffers

From our Treasurer Debbie Mixon: The Scum Ridge Caving Club now has an EIN (Employer Identification Number). This will allow us to set up things like PayPal. The balance in the club bank account is $3,220.75.

There is a new $100 trailer permit fee paid to OTR each year. A vote was held to approve the yearly spending for a trailer permit. The spending was approved by members attending.

The trailer needs walls and a roof added to it. Members approved up to $750 for the trailer. The work will be completed prior to OTR 2018.

Mystic Cave

There is a movement to purchase or lease the property the Mystic Cave resides. Mrs. Teter, the owner passed away, and the property has passed to the family.

The cost would be around $300-$400 yearly. There has been talk of this project for a year with our caving club, however we have not set‑up fund‑raising.

Currently the club takes in about the same amount of money in annual dues from members, as the suggested donation to the cave. It was discussed and decided to be tabled until fund-raising can be established.

New Tables

The tables are too green to paint. We will paint them in 2019.

Discretionary Spending

It was proposed that the board of directors be given the ability to spend money with a vote of the board. The puposed cap of $200 was removed at the suggestion of the members present. The amendment to the rules were approved by the Scum Ridge members in attendance of the annual meeting.

Meetings

It was asked if we need to have two meetings a year. Devon will communicate with Scott Baker regarding the rule for OTR compliance.

A discussion was held regarding having a meeting at Tucker's in Tucker County, West Virginia. Dates for the event would be in the spring or early summer, on non-TRA work weekends.

The TRA work weekend schedule is as follows:

May 18 – 20
June 1 – 3
June 20 – 22

The next annual meeting of the Scum Ridge Caving Club will be Sunday, September 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. The 2017 Scum Ridge annual meeting was adjourned at 12:15.

Spring Meeting

The Scum Ridge Caving Club Spring Meeting will be at Tucker's place in Tucker County, West Virginia. Please join us from 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 8 until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2018 for our first annual spring meeting!

Tucker's property is near Hendricks. We will send out directions and other information as planning matures.

Tucker has plenty of shady spaces for camping, and lots of room for vehicles. There is a dirt pavilion too, perfect for a potluck or caving club meeting. The swimming hole at Tucker's is perfect for your favorite floatable.

We will send out an address soon. Look for an announcement about this on our Facebook page.

Dear Caver,

Old Timers Reunion is less than a fortnight away! This year is sure to be a celebratory event, with its jolly theme.
Online registration is open! This means OTR is just around the corner.

We want to take a moment to thank those who participate in the work weekends. Upkeep of The Robertson Association property is no easy feat. The folks who donate their talents and time really make this party a spectacular success. Your efforts are recognized and deeply appreciated.

We want to remind you we about four events scheduled for the club:
  • Friday afternoon the Ladies of Scum man the gate to the Old Timers Reunion campground from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

  • Later, the Friday night pot luck starts at 7:00 p.m.

  • Join us on Saturday afternoon for a caving trip to the Sinks of Gandy, tentatively at 1:00 p.m.

  • Then on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. join us for the Scum Ridge Caving Club annual business meeting.
Darth Vader Ugly Christmas Sweater Remember, TRA will be hosting an ugly Christmas sweater contest. TRA is also holding a gift exchange and a campsite decorating contest. Some of our members are bringing Christmas trees.

This year the OTR Chair has organized a coat drive for a local charity. Each donation of a new or gently used coat will qualify you to be in a drawing for a free admission to OTR 2018!

There is a lot of talk on the OTR Facebook page about grilled cheese sandwiches after the band plays on Friday and Saturday nights. If you're prone to being hungry after all that dancing, you might want to pack some of your favorite ingredients for those late night, cheesy muchies.

Please let us know if you have ideas for these or any of the activities on the Scum Ridge Facebook page.

Caving Trip 9/2 @ 1:00 p.m.

Gumby Caving Krista Baumgardner-Tetrick is planning a caving trip for all ages on Saturday, September 2, 2017. We will meet at the Scum Ridge canopy around 1:00 p.m. (an hour later than originally published). We will organize equipment and rides at that time.

If you have extra gear you are willing to share, please considering bringing it along to OTR. The plan is to do Sinks of Gandy, then perhaps Stillhouse Cave. It is all dependent on how well the children do. Of course if the older kids are too tired to do a second cave, they can drive back to camp after the first cave.

Friday Night Pot Luck: Join us September 1, 2017 for the OTR kick-off pot luck at the Scum Ridge camp site.

Potluck Dinner Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at 7:00 p.m.

We will be gathering to celebrate our caving club in fellowship on Friday evening, at Old Timers Reunion 2017. Join us to kick-off the party!

Bring your favorite gourmet, camping dish to share. We'll provide the paper plates, bottled water, napkins, and plasticware.

This tradition has been around for a long time. We think this meal, shared among friends, is a fantastic way to start the OTR weekend.

We are asking a few people to bring some long, heavy-duty extension cords for the crockpots. We will probably have electrical power for the pot luck.

We will be discussing the details of this meal on Facebook. With a little coordination, this pot luck can continue to be the kick-off dinner for the reunion weekend.

We will be looking to take many photos of our potluck this year. The image on this newsletter will be swapped out for a collage of our own delicious contributions.

Please clean up any contribution you bring to the pot luck. Like caving: Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints.

Deliverability Issues

Some of our readers are not getting their digital issue of the Scum Ridge Caving Club newsletter. Sometimes adding our email address as a contact in your address book can help with deliverability.

In Gmail, there is an 'All mail' email folder at the bottom of the email folder tree. This folder contains all of your mail, and often contains missing newsletters.

Some folks have good results being forwarded the newsletter from someone else, and then adding the sender to their address book. Consider forwarding your copy of the newsletter to a friend in need.

The attempt to keep our inboxes free of junk has created blacklisting. Frequently, IP addresses are blacklisted when their users have done nothing wrong. We have a completely permission based email list, yet we do not have 100% deliverability. Deliverability has been a problem for legitimate email marketing for many years. Unfortunately, there is no one at Google, AOL, or Yahoo you can call.

2017 OTR SWAG

Scum Ridge Caving Club

Dear Caver,

I hope you are gearing up for the holiday season, the Labor Day holiday that is. Pre-registration is now open! We are getting ever closer to Old Timers Reunion. While we have your attention, here are a few things we wanted to pass along:

The Robertsons Association is giving away free TRA memberships, to those who qualify, until the end of July. The number of sponsors has been reduced as well.

The next business meeting of the Scum Ridge Caving Club is on Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Old Timers Reunion. There will be much to talk about, including our caving excursion to the Sinks of Gandy on Saturday, September 2. Please join us at 11:00 a.m. for our annual business meeting, under the Scum Ridge canopy.

Formations

Mystic Cave

The Mystic Cave in Pendleton County, West Virginia, recently changed ownership. There is interest in leasing the property, so cavers can continue to enjoy all of its beautiful formations.

Krista Baumgardner-Tetrick has contacted Earl Suitor, regarding preservation of the cave and the house on the property. Earl has been spearheading this effort. Kissing Booth Right now he is looking for a financial contribution of $300 per year from interested caving groups to cover utilities and taxes for the house.

Memembers of the Scum Ridge Caving Club have been talking about becoming involved with this project. We would have a dedicated fundraising campaign at OTR in order to raise a donation. There has been mention of a 50-50 raffle, a bake sale, and a kissing booth.

Earl's hope is to have the cave and the house open by September. The Fall VAR will be on Spruce Knob on September 22, 2017, so there is an incentive to have access to the cave by the end of summer.

Mrs. Teter passed away this year. She was a great asset to the caving community; she will be missed.

Please join in the effort to keep the Mystic Cave available to cavers. If we are to do a fundraiser, we need to get it approved by TRA. Discuss this on the Scum Ridge Facebook page.

Warhola Picnic Tables

Picnic Tables!

Two picnic tables were approved at the 2016 annual Scum Ridge Caving Club meeting. The club has only one other picnic table, and it has seen better days. Two new tables are a welcome addition to the campsite assets.

The picnic tables will be tagged and stored at the property, so each year we will get the same tables. The club might host a painting party for the tables after our business meeting on Sunday.

A big thank you to Debbie Mixon for wrangling this task. Debbie contacted several people who expressed an interest in building picnic tables for grottos, and arranged for two tables to be constructed for the club. While Debbie was arranging for the two tables, she found another one for the club at a great price. She also delivered the three table to the camp. Her efforts are very appreciated.

Clark Griswold

Keeping Up With The Griswolds

Who hasn't seen National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, staring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo? For those who haven't, the premise of the movie showcases all the quirks and pitfalls of Christmas. Clark Griswold (Chase) has a rivalry with his neighbors regarding who can festoon a house with the most blinking lights.

We don't want to invoke Clark Griswold. Attendees of OTR should have the option to participate in a relaxing, fun, low-key event. However, since we don't have the ability to gather the same group of people for Christmas each year, this is an opportunity to create a slice of the holiday spirit while we are together.

The board of directors of Scum Ridge Caving Club are interested in how the club might engage in this year's OTR theme.

Decorating a tree might be a welcome activity, and would show our interest in this year's theme. Hanging some lights on the canopy or a little garland might be a nice touch. Perhaps we go caroling at sunset?

Christmas and New Years might be the easiest OTR theme we have seen in a long time. Who doesn't have Christmas decorations collecting dust? If you are in the Christmas spirit, you can reply to this email or join in the discussion on the Scum Ridge Caving Club Facebook page.

Scum Ridge Caving Club requests you remove any and all decorations you bring to the party before noon on Monday, September 4, 2017. Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos.

Sinks of Gandy - Caving Gear!

With the upcoming Scum Ridge caving trip to Sinks of Gandy, we thought it might be a good idea to talk about caving gear. Technology has made some great advancements to outdoor recreational equipment, and cavers have embraced the best of it.

Of course you still can rely on your old standy-bys, hiking boots, wool socks, and blue jeans. These days things like LEDs, Gortex, webbing, neoprene, and PVC have really given cavers an edge in safety and comfort.

Your caving helmet and main light source are the most important gear you can take into a cave with you. As long as you can see and your noggin is protected with good quality gear, the rest of your caving gear can be put together inexpensively.

Most people agree a rock climbing helmet is the best for caving. Look for a style with built in slots for an LED headlamp strap, or even a clip on the front. Bicycle helmets and hardhats are an okay alternative. Make sure the helmet has a chin strap. A non-existent brim is best. There are some issues with securing a headlamp to a non-climbing helmet; many people batten it down with duct tape.

A cave pack is always a good idea. Stock it with extra batteries, cyalume sticks, an extra headlamp, flashlight, snacks, water, a space blanket, heat pack, a first aid kit, tissue, and some extra clothing. Ziplock baggies or other sealable containers are appropriate for things you don't want to get wet, and for refuse that shouldn't be left behind in the cave.

Don't forget about the things that make a caving trip comfortable. Items like gloves, knee and elbow pads, water-wicking long johns, and a balaclava to keep that noggin warm can make the difference between a fantastic caving trip, and an afternoon of drugery.

We don't anticipate having to do any rope work on our upcoming trip to the Sinks of Gandy. It is a relatively easy cave, so harnesses and other climbing gear are not necessary. We encourage you to get your caving gear together, and maybe bring a little extra for those in need.

You should bring clothes to change into after exiting the cave. Garbage bags work great for stowing muddy gear.

Young, old, and everyone in between are invited to join us at the Sinks of Gandy, Saturday afternoon, September 2, 2017. We will gather under the Scum Ridge canopy at noon to discuss safety and organize the rides and routes. We leave from there when we're ready.

Scum Ridge Caving Club

Dear Caver,
You are receiving the Scum Ridge Caving Club (SRCC) electronic newsletter because you attended the 2016 Old Timers Reunion (OTR), and confirmed your membership with SRCC at that time.

You are encouraged to forward this newsletter to your cave-loving friends. Our goal is to grow this email list, and in turn grow our caving club, and our participation at future OTRs.

Happy New Year!

Scum Ridge Caving Club logo Scum Ridge Caving Club held its annual meeting on Sunday, September 4, 2016, in Dailey, WV. SRCC President Patty Taylor opened the meeting at 11:30 a.m. to approximately twenty-nine people.

Patty introduced the officers of SRCC, Vice-President Krista Baumgardener-Tetrick, Treasurer Kim Byers, Ashli Taylor-Friesland Membership Chairman, Debbie Wallace Mixon Membership Chairman, and Secretary Devon Taylor.

Kim Byers recapped the financials for the club. Kim announced she would be passing the position of treasurer to chairman, Debbie Wallace Mixon.

Vice-President Krista Baumgardener-Tetrick proposed the club host an annual trip to the Sinks of Gandy. The club voted with enthusiasm to hold the event on Saturday afternoon, September 2, 2017.

Debbie Wallace Mixon opened up a discussion about buying picnic tables. The proposition to buy two picnic tables passed on a vote of the club members in attendance. NYE

The Friday night pot luck was a great success. It will continue to be an annual event.

Christmas at OTR: Once you get used to the idea, you see there are endless facets to this party theme. Many members agreed Scum Ridge should add a twist to the theme.

Club member Jamie Bishop donated a trailer for the club. It will be stored on the Hempel Estate.

Brenda Francis was tapped to help build and manage a web site* for the Scum Ridge Caving Club This newsletter is her first issue as publisher.

Members expressed their appreciation for the time officers donated to the caving club. Kim Byers did a great job as treasurer for many years; her time and talents were deeply appreciated.

The next annual meeting of the Scum Ridge Caving Club will be held on Sunday, September 3, 2017, at 11:30 a.m., in Dailey, West Virginia.

Read below for more details from our 2016 meeting.

Camping Tree

Christmas in September

The 2017 Old Timers Reunion theme is Christmas. This theme was a delight to some, and puzzling to others. Since Scum Ridge folks have always been known for their creativity and ability to adapt, it was proposed that our caving club put a spin on this theme. Scum Ridge Caving Club will be celebrating New Year's Eve at the 2017 OTR.

Bring your noisemakers, don your sequin fanny pack, dig out that tuxedo t-shirt, we are doing NYE with all the bells and whistles. Since NYE has as much opportunity to be adapted to a camping party as Christmas does, we should be able to create a fun experience, as well as make our camp stand out.

Keep an eye out for those after Christmas sales with leftover NYE gear. Does anyone have NYE or NYD (New Year's Day) traditions they would like to share?

Feel free to discuss this theme on Facebook. The possibilities are endless for the Christmas theme, especially when you add a New Years twist. Of course we'll be celebrating Christmas with the rest of the camp; who is bringing the tree?

Sinks of Gandi

Sinks of Gandy Cave Trip Sept. 2, 2017

Thanks to our Vice-President Krista Baumgardener-Tetrick, our caving club will be hosting an OTR trip to the Sinks of Gandy on September 2, 2017. Join Krista, and other friends of the underground, as we explore this relatively easy cave on Saturday afternoon.

This will be a caving trip for young and old. And don't forget about those OTR virgins!

This caving trip is expected to be very popular. We will be discussing this excursion on Facebook regarding equipment, transportation, flip-side dinner, and other logistics.

Thank you Krista for championing this caving trip.

Friday Night Pot Luck: Join us September 1, 2017 for the OTR kick-off pot luck at the Scum Ridge camp site.

Pot Luck Dinner Friday, Sept.

Last year, some very generous people allowed us to use their generators. It was nice to have some hot fare.

We will be discussing the details of this meal on Facebook. With a little coordination, this pot luck can continue to be a kick-off dinner for the reunion weekend.

Please clean up any contribution you bring to the pot luck. Like caving: Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints.
